- Q:Is overhauling the manual transmission assembly a challenging task for home mechanics on 2003 BMW Z4?Posted by Ralph H.A:To overhaul a car with a manual transmission is a difficult task for do it yourself techniques; a lot of small parts have to be taken out and replaced skilfully with other new ones, apart from having to measure tiny tolerances and than adjusting them with special shims and spacers. Transmission components that are available for internal use can sometimes be expensive and thus, if a poorly-functioning component is suspected or there are signs of a noisy one, it is either advisable to have a competent technician to overhaul the unit or purchase a remanufactured unit. Even though some of the work can be carried out with the transmission still mated to the vehicle, with the right equipment and a proper and patient attitude toward one's work an overhaul can be completed as effectively and thoroughly as could be wished for were the unit disassembled. These items include both internal and external circlip pliers, bearing pullers, slide hammer, pin punches, dial test indicator sometimes hydraulic press and a strong workbench with a vice. Taking a detailed record when disassembling the device makes reassembly easier; also, knowing where the problem area is will make an examination and fixing process easier.Answered by BMW Parts Specialist Tony / Jan 27, 2026
