To turn the camshafts of the M54 engine, two chains are employed; the major chain driven by the crankshaft that turns the primary sprocket on the exhaust camshaft, the secondary chain working the intake camshaft. Hydraulic tensioner is used for each chain that are maintained under tension. The intake and exhaust camshafts work with variable timing controlled by the engine control module, or ECM, by means of a system referred to as double VANOS. Some of the special features include that service and repair of the camshaft timing chain involves - removal of front crankshaft vibration damper, double VANOS unit, engine oil pan and timing chain housing cover and therefore it is advisable to learn the steps before working on them.
