2014 BMW 428i Crankshaft Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Crankshaft Seal (rear main/flywheel seal) on 2014 BMW 428i?
A: To change the crankshaft rear main seal, it is necessary to take off the transmission and the flywheel. Thus, we start with the removal of the transmission, of which it's the same for either manual or automatic vehicles. To remove a flywheel, the clutch pressure plate and disc must be taken off for a manual transmission. Before removing the magnet wheel from the crankshaft, drain the engine oil and keep it in a plastic bag away from ferrous metal since it is magnetised and holds ferrous metal. The next step is to remove the screw of the pulse sensor so that it can slide up and out. Using a drill with a maximum bit size of 2.5 mm, a hole must be drilled in the seal, thereafter, any metal filing should be cleaned up immediately. A unique tool is then twisted into the hole to tug the seal out. They position a new seal on a special tool and place it on the crankshaft, pushing it until it's flush with the crankcase, then remove the tool. Using a combination of special tools secured to the crankshaft, the seal is drawn in, turning until they bottom out. Lastly, all special tools will be removed, and the installation will be carried out in the reverse order of disassembly.
