- Q: How to replace the crankshaft rear main (flywheel) seal on 2014 BMW 428i?A: The rear main (flywheel) crankshaft seal is changed by removing the transmission unit and using special BMW tool 11 9 260 or equivalent to lock the flywheel. When you remove the flywheel bolts after slackening them, they should be discarded. After that the torque plate and the flywheel can be removed. Clean the bolt threads in the crank. Make sure the dowel sleeve is installed on the flywheel and the torque converter mounting holes in the torque plate and flywheel are aligned. Use new flywheel bolts. For N55 engines, the magnetic reluctor wheel for the crankshaft sensor needs to be positioned correctly before reinstalling the transmission.
