BMW 2002 Air Filter Box

The BMW 2002 Air Filter Box protects the motor from damaging dirt by enclosing the filter in a hard box. It forces every breath of intake air through that element before entering the combustion chambers. The Air Filter Box is located close to the front of the car and captures the rush of oncoming air. It strains out dirt, dust, sand, and leaves before feeding a clean flow to the intake manifold. The function of the Air Filter Box is to prevent the pistons, rings, cylinder walls, and valves from abrasive wear while also keeping excess debris out of the oil system. For the 2002 line, BMW kept a basic stamped-steel Air Filter Box so that carbureted and fuel-injected versions could share the same two-piece housing held by quick-release clips with a round replaceable filter inside. The Air Filter Box's design uses basic physics, combining housing shape with tight rubber seals and no moving parts, so the only thing that needs maintenance is the filter itself. A fresh Air Filter Box is effective in supporting crisp acceleration, solid fuel economy, and long engine life, making every 2002 feel lively and allowing BMW drivers to avoid expensive repairs.

BMW 2002 Air Filter Box Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to remove and replace the air filter box on single and twin carburettor on BMW 2002?
    Posted by Joserodrigo Q.
    A:
On single carburettor models, start by pulling the hose from the intake preheater and disconnecting the vacuum hose. Then, slacken the air filter box body strut nuts. Withdraw the air filter box from the carburettor and disconnect the crankcase breather hose. Release the cover clips and extract the element. It is important to note that the maximum operating mileage for an element is 10000 miles (16000 km), so it should be renewed at this point. In dusty conditions, it is recommended to renew the element more frequently. Before installing the new element and refitting the assembly, make sure to clean out the interior of the air filter box casing. On twin carburettor models, remove the intake scoop at the rear of the carburettor, pull off the breather hose, and loosen the connecting hose clamps at the carburettor. Release the air filter box securing bolts and remove the assembly. Finally, release the end cover clips, extract the element, and renew it following the same steps as described before.
