BMW 2002 Brake Drum

The BMW 2002 Brake Drum is a very important part of it. It converts the motion into heat through friction and gives the classic compact sedan rear axle stopping power. Cast from heat-conductive, wear-resistant iron, the Brake Drum spins along with the wheel until brake shoes press outwards with their lining material clinging to the inner surface and causing the friction that rapidly slows rotation. This simple mechanism not only provides uniform deceleration to BMW owners, it also keeps cabin noise down and enables a simple cable-operated parking brake to lock the car securely when it is parked. Throughout the production run, the rear Brake Drum design remained essentially unchanged, and front discs assumed primary braking duties due to the enclosed design of the drum and its suitability for the weight distribution and everyday driving requirements of the 2002 series. Although later performance models adopted four-wheel discs, all mainstream 2002 variants retained the same cast-iron Brake Drum without significant changes in its dimensions. The distinctions between years focus on fairly minute updates to the hardware and shoe material rather than on the drum itself. Thanks to this durability, many surviving BMW 2002 cars are still running on their original Brake Drum and are able to provide quiet, reliable control of the rear wheels.

BMW 2002 Brake Drum Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to determine if a brake drum is cracked or worn on BMW 2002?
    Posted by Kenneth Z.
    A:
With the brake drum removed, tap it with a spanner and note if there is a clear ring; if not, the drum may be cracked. Deep grooves or scored internal surfaces are caused by rivets due to non-renewal of worn linings. If the brake drum has worn oval in shape, the amount of out-of-round can only be accurately checked using an internal type vernier or dial gauge. The maximum out-of-round and the amount by which the internal diameter of the drum can be increased by re-finishing are specified in the relevant guidelines.
