  How to remove and refit the sump and overhaul the oil pump on BMW 2500?

  To release the sump, it is necessary to undo sprocket and the pump fixing bolts; remove the pump and strainer from the crankcase, and collect the front and rear mounting shims together. For refitting reverse the removal procedure, but ensure correct chain tensioning of front and rear shims between the pump mounting flangles and crankcase where the oil hole is positioned in shim. Both thicknesses of the shims must be the same and the shims should be fitted until gently thumb pressure can be applied midway inbetween the sprockets of the pump drive chain. After that loosen the strainer support plate upper mounting bolts to align the plate where relevant to the pick-up pipe without tension before tightening the mounting bolts and replacing the sump. To overhaul the oil pump, dismantle the pump and undo the threaded union and from it come out the spring, the piston, the pump cover and the strainer. Use feeler gauges to check internal clearances: the clearance between the outer rotor and body should be 0.1± 0.025mm and that between the inner and outer rotor should be 0.12mm- 0.30mm. This conclusion applies where clearances exceed the above stated limits; replace the respective components. Using a straightedge measure the gap between the top surface of the rotors and the housing face, which must be in the range of 0,050 to 0,091mm; if clearance is more use new pump housing is to be required. To adjust or change the rotors pull a suitable puller for the outer flange but do not driven or lever the. During installation, the flange must be pressed into place and, when done, the distance between the flange and the inner rotor must ideally be 44.3 ± 0.1mm. If the pump unit has a vent hole, air can be let in through the vent hole so as to ensure that it is cleaned. After cleaning the oil pick-up pipe and strainer, the oil pump should be re-erected in the reverse order and replaced in the described way above.
