BMW 325i Ignition Coil

BMW 325i Ignition Coil converts the battery's modest 12 volts into a surge of up to 40,000 volts so each cylinder receives the spark needed to fire. The component sits at the heart of the German sedan's ignition system, acting as the energy bridge between low voltage battery circuits and high voltage spark plugs. Early 325i models applied a single Ignition Coil feeding a distributor, where a spinning rotor routed the high tension pulse through wires to each cylinder. In later BMW years a waste spark DIS layout grouped two cylinders per coil, reducing moving parts and boosting reliability. The recent 325i engines shifted to coil on plug design, placing one Ignition Coil directly atop each plug, eliminating long leads and sharpening spark timing. In each BMW generation the iron core and twin copper windings inside every Ignition Coil create and collapse magnetic fields to multiply voltage. Heat, vibration or excessive plug resistance can crack insulation and weaken an Ignition Coil, prompting BMW enthusiasts and 325i drivers to replace it before power and fuel economy suffer.

BMW 325i Ignition Coil Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to remove and install the ignition coils on BMW 325i?
    Posted by Xuezhi Z.
    A:
To remove the engine cover, lift the front of the cover up and pull it forwards. Then, remove the cabin air filter cover and mounting fasteners. Slide the filter from the housing. Release the clips and remove the plastic covers on each side of the engine compartment. Unclip the hose from the left-hand cover. Depress the clips and pull the cable guide forwards from the cabin air filter lower housing. Release the clip and remove the bolt at each side, then slide the cabin air filter lower housing forwards and maneuver it up and out. Unscrew the oil filler cap, then remove the bolts and the plastic cover from the top of the engine. Pry up the right-hand edge of the plastic covers over the ignition coils and disconnect the coil electrical connectors. With the wiring plugs disconnected, pull the coils from the spark plugs. For models with strut tower supports, remove the plastic cap from the center of the cowl trim panel and remove the bolt in the center of the cowl. Remove the bolt at each outer end of the supports, hold the rubber grommet in place and slide the supports outwards. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring that any ground wires or brackets are reinstalled as noted before removal.
