BMW 330i Alternator
The BMW 330i Alternator is responsible for maintaining the battery charge in the car and distributing consistent electrical power to all devices within while the car's engine is running. It converts the movement of the crankshaft into usable electricity with the help of a belt connected through a pulley, which rotates a rotor mounted within stationary stator coils. Housed in two cast aluminum shells, the Alternator has a bearing in the front, a cooling fan, and a pulley on the shaft, along with brushes, a rectifier full of diodes, and often the voltage regulator strapped on the back. As the magnetic field of the rotor passes by the coils in the stator, it induces AC power in the coils that is instantly converted to DC power by the diodes to keep the lights, infotainment, and engine controls from pulling power from the battery. Early BMW 330i models applied an Alternator whose output was moderated by a separate or built-in regulator that adjusted field current, while newer BMW 330i versions allow the Powertrain Control Module to command that regulation, thereby allowing for finer control of the system that avoids undercharging or overcharging during stop-and-go driving. - Q:How to remove and install an alternator on BMW 330i?Posted by Marcelo P.A:Disconnect the negative Battery Cable. Remove the alternator drivebelt. On 2.0L models, remove the tensioner. Remove the air cleaner housing. Unlock and disconnect the electrical connector, remove the nut and disconnect the battery cable from the rear of the alternator. Remove upper and lower mounting bolts, then remove alternator. Note: Since crankcase is made of magnesium, mounting bolts are aluminum and cannot be reused; use new bolts instead. On 3.0L models, to remove the alternator pulley on units with an over-running clutch, mount alternator in a bench vise and pry off plastic cap while using BMW tool No 12 7 121 inserted into center of pulley to hold it until pulley center is loosened while holding shaft stationary using BMW tool No 12 7 122 or equivalent tools by aftermarket tool manufacturers. Pulley can be removed by putting BMW tool No 12 7 121 into centre of pulley while holding shaft stationary using BMW tool No 12 7 122 or equivalent tools by aftermarket tool manufacturers; loosen pulley centre as you hold shaft stationary along its lengthwise direction up to removal point without losing sight that there are other suitable alternative tools which may either be offered by after market companies specializing in these kind of work or even manufactured by some leading garage brands like Snap-on among others who deal with specific vehicle make so that they meet needs indicated under whatever reason they demand specifically this type for their customers whose cars they deal with (i.e., vehicles produced by either OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) or ODMs (Original Design Manufacturers)) indicated when making orders accordingly put their specifications pertaining appropriate use thereof before ordering them from any manufacturer including itself alternatively get in touch directly via mail because most probably you could easily find somebody who has already come across same predicament way back thus obtain complete control over his/her mind again unless he/she decides to keep quiet. Note: On 2.0L models, the alternator pulley should not be removed. The pulley is part of the alternator and cannot be replaced separately; if there is a problem with it, one must replace the entire unit rather than just changing that component (which would also solve their issues once for all). Installation: Installation is the reverse of removal, tightening all fasteners to their specified torque where given.
