Q: How to replace the parking brake shoes and adjuster mechanism?
A: Carefully pry up the parking brake lever boot from the center console. Remove the rear section of the center console if necessary for access. Apply the parking brake, then use a screwdriver to push the spring stop back until the retaining hook engages with the stop. Remove the rear Brake Disc, making a note of the installed position of all components. Using a pair of pliers, carefully unhook and remove the parking brake shoe return springs. Release the shoe retaining pins using pliers by depressing them and rotating them through 90-degrees, then remove the pins and springs. Remove both parking brake shoes and the shoe adjuster mechanism, noting how it is installed. Inspect the parking brake shoes for wear or contamination, and replace if necessary. It is recommended that the return springs are replaced as a matter of course. While the shoes are removed, clean and inspect the condition of the shoe adjuster and expander mechanisms; replace them if they show signs of wear or damage. Apply a fresh coat of high-temperature brake grease to the threads of the adjuster wheel and sliding surfaces of the expander mechanism. Do not allow the grease to contact the shoe friction material. Prior to installation, clean the backing plate, and apply a thin smear of high-temperature brake grease to all those surfaces of the backing plate which bear on the shoes. Do not allow the grease to contact the shoe friction material. Place the shoes in position and secure them with the retaining pins and springs. Make sure the lower ends of the shoes are correctly engaged with the expander, then slide the adjuster mechanism into position between the upper ends of the shoes. Check that all components are correctly installed, and install the upper and lower return springs using a pair of pliers. Center the parking brake shoes and install the brake disc. If removed from the expander, insert the Parking Brake Cable end through the backing plate and into the expander. Prior to installing the wheel, adjust the parking brake.
