  How to remove, replace, and recharge the A/C compressor on BMW 428i?

  Refers to the manufacturer's instructions, attach an approved refrigerant recovery/recycling/recharging unit to the NC system and discharge the system, then remove the charge air duct, mark the NC drive belt with the direction of rotation and remove the belt. For N20 and N26 engines, at the A/C compressor remove bolts and separate the refrigerant lines from the NC compressor, disconnect the electrical connection, remove fasteners while supporting the NC compressor and lift the compressor upwards out of the engine compartment. For the N55 engine, raise and safely support the car, remove the splash shield beneath the engine, remove fastener from the A/C compressor from underneath, then from above remove bolts and separate refrigerant lines, disconnect electrical connection, hold the A/C compressor in place while removing fasteners and lift the compressor upwards out of the engine compartment. The installation is the reverse of removal, replace sealing O-rings when reconnecting refrigerant lines, if installing a new compressor or if the compressor is off the vehicle for more than 24 hours replace the condenser, install and tension the A/C drive belt using the previously made direction mark, and recharge the A/C system following the equipment manufacturer's instructions. When starting a new compressor for the first time, switch the A/C system on, set air vents to open, start the engine and allow it to idle, set blower output to about 75% of maximum and run the A/C for at least two minutes at idle speed (under 1500 rpm) because the new compressor may be damaged if run above idle speed at start-up.
