- Q: How to remove and reinstall the brake master cylinder and brake fluid reservoir on BMW 428i?A:Brake fluid is highly corrosive and dangerous to the environment; dispose of it properly. Remove left engine compartment cover and left lower dashboard trim. Working at the brake fluid reservoir at the left rear of the engine compartment, pull off supply hose for the clutch master cylinder, detach the brake fluid level sensor connector (8), remove the reservoir cap and, using a clean syringe, empty the reservoir; plug open brake fluid lines and ducts to prevent leakage and contamination. Remove reservoir locking fastener and lift the reservoir out of the brake master cylinder. Disconnect master cylinder brake lines and plug open brake lines to prevent contamination; remove master cylinder mounting nuts (8) and remove the master cylinder. During reinstallation ensure all nuts, fluid couplings, thread bores, and mating surfaces are clean; mount the master cylinder to the brake booster using a new sealing O-ring and new self-locking nuts. Caution: Align the master cylinder pushrod and booster pushrod and do not over-torque the mounting nuts as this could damage the brake booster and prevent proper vacuum build-up. Connect brake fluid lines to the master cylinder, reinstall the fluid reservoir using new sealing grommets, complete the installation in reverse order, top up with fresh brake fluid and bleed the entire brake system.
