  • Q: How to remove and install the cylinder head on an N20/N26 engine on BMW 428i?
    A:
    The cylinder head needs special tools to lock the camshafts and crankshaft in TDC position and to time the camshafts. Remanufactured cylinder heads are available through authorized dealers. Disassembly, removal or assembly of the camshafts or cylinder head with our tools may damage the engine. Once the cylinder head stretch bolts are loosened, they must be replaced, and the negative battery cable should be disconnected. The splash shield and exhaust system in the engine bay are to be detached. The engine coolant and oil are to be drained. Afterwards, the ignition coil cover, air filter housing. Take off the cylinder head cover and VANOS units with the camshafts and crankshaft locked in TDC position. The eccentric shaft must be set and secured and the wiring harness freed to the cylinder head cover region. The bolts of the timing chain guide rail should be removed, thereafter the bolts of the cylinder head should be loosened and removed. In order not to damage the valves, the cylinder head should be placed on its side. The head surfaces should be cleaned and inspected for defects. After checking for warp and aligning the sleeves of the cylinder heads, a new gasket should be fitted and the cylinder head secured using new bolts in the right sequence.
