  • Q: How to remove and install the Harmonic Balancer (crankshaft vibration damper/front pulley) for N20 and N26 engines on BMW 428i?
    A:
    To replace the harmonic balancer (or front pulley), the vehicle must be safely raised and supported off the ground. To start the engine compartment splash shield and the accessory belt removal. For the manual transmission, fix special tool 11 8 180 on the transmission using fastening bolts A. Thereafter, slide the lock handle upwards and tighten bolt B. To secure the flywheel for automatic transmission, place a BMW special tool (no. 2 222 742) through the opening in the transmission bell housing, move the bolt slightly forward and tighten it. Remove the bolts securing the harmonic balancer mount and then lift the harmonic balancer off. Take care not to loosen the harmonic balancer hub bolt which would permit the timing chain drive sprocket to rotate. Reinstallation is performed in the reverse order.
