- Q: How to remove and install the inner tie rod on the steering rack on BMW 428i?A:Raise the front of the car and remove the road wheel; make a length reference mark on the tie rod, then remove the outer Tie Rod End and cut the rack boot clamps and slide the boot off; loosen and remove the inner tie rod shaft (1) from the steering rack. Caution, to avoid damage to the steering rack while removing the tie rod, turn the steering until the end of the rack is as far as possible inside the rack housing; when reassembling, grease the tie rod taper so the rack boot support buffer or small end of the rack boot slides on the tie rod when the tie rod is tightened to prevent the rack boot from twisting; inspect the boot for any signs of damage and replace if necessary using new band clamps (new rack boot comes with new band clamps); installation is the reverse of removal, noting the following: make sure threaded parts are clean; use anti-seize paste on inner tie rod threads; tighten the inner tie rod to the rack in two stages; use new self-locking nuts where applicable; use the previously made reference marks to set toe temporarily; after reassembling the steering, have the car professionally aligned and carry out steering angle sensor adjustment using a BMW scan tool.
