BMW 428i Timing Chain Tensioner Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How should the timing chain tensioner be handled during removal, draining, and reassembly on BMW 428i?
    Posted by Dana G.
    A:
The timing chain tensioner is located at the right front of the cylinder head and should be removed carefully to catch any dripping oil with a shop towel, ensuring that oil does not contaminate the accessory belt. If the chain tensioner is to be reused, drain its oil chamber by placing it vertically on a level working surface and compressing it slowly, repeating this process twice. It is important to note that no sealing ring is fitted to the chain tensioner at the factory, so a new sealing O-ring must be used during engine reassembly.
