Remove the transmission by using BMW special tools 244000 to unscrew the torque converter, then pull the converter straight off the transmission input shaft. Be cautious, as removing the torque converter will cause transmission fluid to drain out, so be prepared to catch any dripping fluid. Remove the torque converter slowly and set it down vertically to prevent spilling additional fluid. When reinstalling the torque converter, ensure that the new seal is not damaged by lightly oiling the converter seal surface and rotating the converter during installation, applying slight pressure until the recesses in the converter audibly locate in the ATF pump, then press the converter in firmly. After fitting the torque converter, measure the distance between the mating surface and the surface of the threaded hole in the torque converter; for the A5S390R transmission, the measured value must be greater than 30 mm (1.18 in), and for the GA6L45R transmission, it must be greater than 25 mm (0.98 in). If the torque converter is not installed correctly, the impeller driver in the converter may be destroyed when the transmission is mated to the engine.
