BMW Z4 Door Hinge

The BMW Z4 Door Hinge is constructed to hold the roadster's door firmly down to the body while allowing for the door to swing open and shut with controlled ease. Like many Door Hinge units, it is responsible for the full weight of the panel. It keeps the latch and striker aligned so the door closes on the first try, and it has stops that will prevent the door from flinging too far and hitting against the fender. Early versions of the Z4 applied the traditional style steel leaves with internal detents, but later versions of the Z4 use a compact hinge with a separate check strap, reducing weight but still providing the ability to lock the door in a half-open position for parking lots. When thousands of cycles have worn the pin and brass bushings, the door may droop and then owners have to lift and slam the door. BMW offers repair kits to change only those small pieces rather than the entire unit, not having to remove the weld. Whether bolted or welded, each Door Hinge needs to remain lubricated because dry motion increases play and misalignment.
