BMW Wiper Blades

Ensure the wipers are parked with the stalk switch in the OFF position and the ignition is OFF. Use a fender cover to protect the windshield. To prevent damage to the wiper arms and pivots, avoid manually sliding or forcing the wiper arms across the windshield. Remove the wiper arms and lift off the plenum chamber seals, twisting the quick-release fasteners 90° to remove the plenum cover. Take out the cowl cover expansion rivets and lift off the cover. Pull up on the left end of the fresh air intake funnel to remove it. Release the wiper motor bracket from under the cowl by removing the mounting bolts, using a crowfoot wrench to take off the nut, lifting out the bracket with the motor, and detaching the electrical connector. Before reinstalling, replace rubber mounting grommets as needed. Install the wiper motor bracket and tighten the mounting bolts. Before reinstalling the wiper arms, reconnect the wiper motor electrical connector and briefly switch the ignition ON with the wiper switch in the OFF position to allow the wiper pivots to reach the PARK position. Reinstall the wiper arms and blades, ensuring that each wiper blade is approximately 55 mm (2 in) above the lower windshield edge when parked. Check the wiper blade contact angle and adjust it if necessary using the wiper motor bracket adjusting screw. After adjusting, grip the adjusting screw and tighten the nut, securing it with varnish. Recheck the torque on the wiper arm fasteners after the first use.

Some of the issues that people experience with windshield wipers are as follows and include; streaking, the formation of water drops after wiping or whenever the wipers are at work, and blade chatter. Streaking can be attributed often to the wiper blades that have been depilated by road film or car wash wax and all one needs to do is, wash the blades with soapy water; if the situation does not improve then, change the wiper blades. Wiper blades must ideally be replaced two times in a year at the beginning of the winter and after it. Normally droplets of water after wiping are usually caused by oily, road film or diesel exhaust deposits which has to washed off with alcohol or ammonia solution or other non- abrasion degra facilities. Some of the causes of chatter include; Dirty or worn blades or misaligned wiper arms. To make some adjustments, one has to use the special tool along the wiper blade fulcrum in order to see whether this part of wiper blade is perpendicular to the windshield surface. Hold the wiper arm still with the second tool that is designed to ensure that the wiper blade twists uniformly and disposes of any angle to the windshield during expectancy. If so, issues do not stop, then a replacement of the blades and wiper arms may be required.

To replace a wiper blade, the retaining tab must be pushed and the blade withdrew from the arm. The wiper arm should be checked to see if the tension spring which pushes the wiper against the glass is weak or not and if it is weak then wiper arm should be replaced. These could be as a result of oil, road film or diesel exhaust on the windshield; cleaning should be done using an alcohol or ammonia solution or a nonabrasive cleanser. Wiper blade chatter may arise from either Wiper blade wear and tear, the windshield, or problems with wiper arms where the arm may be bent or twisted. Again wash both the blade and the glass, set the wiper arm such that pressure is uniformly applied along the blade and make sure that the blade is in a right angle with the glass when static. There is oil designed for wiper linkage located under the hood on the driver side which should be applied to the linkages of the wiper. If problems persist, the blades could be too old or used and should be reconstructed.

To replace the wiper blade, first, you have to remove the old blade, by pulling the insert out of the wiper arm guides and using needle nose pliers if the guides are too close together. Take out the old insert from the guides while at the same time be keen on the position of the insert. Remove the metal support strips of the old insert and fit these on the slots of the new insert and make sure that the cutouts on the right side of the support strips are facing up. Insert new wiper blade through the wiper blade slot by sliding it to the end slots and it fits. Sometime wiper blades may have two retaining tabs available in the particular model type.

Remove the lower trim panel on the upper tailgate and the rear wiper arm. Use duct tape to secure the rear wiper motor against falling out, then detach the electrical connector and remove the mounting bolts. Pull the wiper motor out of the grommet, and prior to reinstallation, replace the rubber grommet, ensuring the mark on the grommet is horizontal. Insert the wiper motor into the grommet and install the bolts finger-tight, tightening them fully after centering the wiper motor.
