A special 32 mm narrow open-ended wrench (tool number 11 5 040) is required to remove the fan and viscous coupling assembly. To begin the removal process, the expansion rivets mounting the fan shroud to the radiator should be removed by lifting up the center pin and prying the entire rivet from place. The cooling ducts should then be disconnected from the shroud and removed from the engine compartment. Next, the electrical connectors on the right side of the shroud assembly should be disconnected. The fan shroud upper retaining clips can be released by pulling out their center pins and then lifting the shroud upwards and out of position. Using the special open-ended wrench, the viscous coupling should be unscrewed from the water pump and the cooling fan should be removed by loosening the cooling fan hub nut (which has a left-hand thread) using the special open-ended wrench and removing the cooling fan. It is important to note that the viscous coupling also has a left-hand thread and if necessary, a strip of metal bolted to the drive pulley can be used to counterhold the nut. The retaining bolts should then be removed to separate the cooling fan from the coupling, taking note of the direction in which the fan is installed. For installation, the fan should be reinstalled to the viscous coupling and the bolts should be tightened to the specified torque. It is crucial to ensure that the fan is installed facing the correct direction. The fan should then be screwed onto the water pump and the hub nut should be tightened to the specified torque. If the fan is installed incorrectly, the efficiency of the cooling system will be significantly reduced. The fan shroud should be engaged with the lugs on the radiator and secured in position with the retaining clips. Finally, the cooling ducts (where equipped) should be reconnected to the shroud and the retaining screws should be securely tightened.

To remove the cooling fan on manual transmission models, start by removing the expansion rivets that mount the fan shroud to the radiator. Disconnect the cooling ducts from the shroud and remove them from the engine compartment. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the right side of the shroud assembly and remove the hoses from the clips on the lower part of the shroud. Remove the screw and expansion rivet from the radiator and fan shroud. Lift the fan upwards and out of the engine compartment, being careful not to damage the radiator. Remove the three screws and the fan motor from the shroud. If necessary, remove the four screws and the timer unit from the shroud. For primary cooling fan on automatic transmission models, remove the expansion rivets mounting the fan shroud to the radiator. Remove the front bumper. Unclip and disconnect the fan motor electrical connector. Pry out the four expansion rivets and remove the fan shroud. Finally, remove the four nuts and withdraw the fan and motor. To install, simply reverse the removal steps, ensuring the lugs on the lower edge of the shroud engage in the corresponding slots in the radiator edge.
