To remove the M52TU and M54 engines, start by relieving the fuel system pressure and disconnecting the negative battery terminal cable. Make sure the fuel tank is near empty and siphon the fuel if necessary. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Detach the parking brake cables and remove the driveshaft. Under the vehicle, remove the trim panel and sill trim on both sides of the tank. Pull the parking brake cables from the guide tubes. Mark and disconnect the fuel supply and return hoses, as well as the fuel filler hose. Support the fuel tank with a jack and wood block. Remove the retaining bolt and straps securing the tank. Lower the tank slightly and disconnect the wiring connector(s) and breather hose. Lower the tank and maneuver it out from under the vehicle. To install, reverse the removal steps and add at least 1-1/3 gallons of fuel for proper fuel system function. For the M56 engines, remove the bottom portion of the rear seat and move the floor trim and insulation. Remove the seal cover fasteners and cover. Disconnect the electrical connector, remove the rear differential, and remove the wheel well cover. Detach the feed line, vent line, fuel filler pipe, and fueling vent line. Support the fuel tank with a jack and wood block. Remove the bolts securing the tank retaining straps and carefully lower the tank. Installation is the reverse of removal, and make sure to add at least 1-1/3 gallons of fuel for proper fuel system function.
