BMW 31211101115 Tapered Roller Bearing

Jack up the front of the car and remove the roadwheel. Disconnect the fluid line bracket from the suspension strut, unbolt the caliper, and support it to one side without disconnecting the hydraulic lines. Tap or twist off the dust cap, remove the split pin, and unscrew the castellated nut. Extract the thrust washer and carefully pull the hub assembly from the stub axle, catching the outer taper bearing. Use a suitable drift to drive out the oil seal and extract the inner taper roller bearing. If new bearings are to be installed, drive out the bearing tracks using a bearing puller or drift. Clean the interior of the hub and dust cap, then install the new bearing tracks, the inner taper roller bearing, and tap in a new oil seal. Pack wheel bearing grease into the inside of the hub until it fills the deeper recess but is no thicker than the bearing tracks. Press some grease into the bearing rollers and then reassemble by reversing the dismantling process. Adjust the bearings and refit the dust cap, ensuring it is no more than 1/3rd full with grease.

Endfloat refers to the axial movement of the bearings, while rocking of the taper roller bearings will be evident if the bearings are worn.

Install the inboard bearing first.
