Due to the Valvetronic system, the intake manifold in 3.0L models does not create enough vacuum for the brake booster, so a vacuum pump is needed. The pump is located on the left-hand face of the cylinder block and is driven by a chain from the crankshaft sprocket. For 2.0L models, the vacuum pump is located at the rear of the valve cover and is driven by the exhaust camshaft. To remove the vacuum pump on 3.0L models, the drivebelt and tensioner must be removed, followed by the vacuum pump sealing cover. The intake manifold is then removed, and the crankshaft pulley bolt is rotated clockwise until the holes in the vacuum pump drive sprocket align with the mounting bolts. The pump sprocket is secured, and the retaining bolt and pump mounting bolts are loosened. The drive chain tensioner is pushed to the right and locked in place, allowing the sprocket bolt and pump mounting bolts to be fully unscrewed. The pump can then be pulled out and replaced, with a new gasket installed between the pump and housing. Installation is the reverse of removal. For 2.0L models, the engine covers are turned and lifted off, followed by the removal of the trailing link and engine sound insulation cover. The vacuum line is disconnected, and the positive battery cable is removed from the holder on the bottom of the vacuum pump. The turbocharger vacuum line screw is removed, and the line to the turbocharger control unit is disconnected. The pump is then pulled off the cover by removing the mounting screws. If necessary, the vacuum pump O-ring is replaced. The O-ring is lubricated, and the pump is slowly installed while rotating and pushing it into the exhaust camshaft gear. The pump screws are installed and tightened securely, and the remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal.
