1976 BMW 2002 Crankshaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove the crankshaft during an engine overhaul on 1976 BMW 2002?
A: With the engine removed, withdraw the clutch assembly, flywheel, timing chain, and oil pump. Unbolt and remove the rear oil seal retainer. The crankshaft is typically removed during a major engine overhaul when the piston and connecting rods are already taken out; however, it can be withdrawn without disturbing the cylinder head or piston/connecting rod assemblies if the big-ends are disconnected and the pistons are pushed slightly up the bores from their lowest position, but care must be taken not to push them too far or the rings may be ejected, necessitating full dismantling. The main bearing caps are numbered from 1 to 5, starting at the front of the engine, with the numerals visible from the same direction, and these numbers should not be confused with casting marks. Unscrew and remove the main bearing bolts, then lift off the caps along with the bearing shells, ensuring to identify the shells by their position. Note that the oil pump pick-up pipe support is attached to the third main bearing, where the shells are flanged and serve as crankshaft thrust washers. Finally, lift the crankshaft from the crankcase, ensuring that the bearing shells are retrieved and identified for proper reinstallation.
