1976 BMW 2002 Wheel Bearing Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and replace the rear wheel bearing, stub axle, and oil seals on 1976 BMW 2002?
A: Remove the stub axle, then take out the inner and outer oil seals and bearings using a bearing extractor or by driving them out with a suitable drift. Extract the shim(s) and tubular spacer. If new bearings are to be fitted, install the inboard one first, then measure the distance between the seat of the outboard bearing and the face of the inboard bearing outer track using a depth gauge. Measure the length of the spacer with a vernier gauge. Subtract the measurement of the spacer from the distance measured and then subtract the specified bearing end float; the final figure represents the thickness of shims that must be installed to the inner face of the outer bearing. Reassemble the components in reverse order of removal, injecting 1.2 oz (35 g) of wheel bearing grease into the bearings and hub, and pack the sealing grooves of new oil seals with graphite grease. Finally, with the roadwheel fitted and the handbrake applied, lower the car to the ground and tighten the wheel nuts and castellated driveshaft nut to their specified torques.
