2000 BMW X5 Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to install the cylinder head in six cylinder engine on 2000 BMW X5?
A: When fitting the cylinder head to a six cylinder engine the cylinder head and gasket surface of the cylinder block and the timing chain covers should be cleaned removing any foreign matter or liquid which may be stuck in between bolts and cause damage to the block. Metal scrapers or wire brushes should not be used on the aluminum components; rather use a hard wooden or plastic scraper or discs on metal appropriate for the job. If the cylinder head has been machined, fit a special gasket not less than 1 mm thicker which can be purchased from an authorized BMW dealer, the marked side of the gasket should be upwards. Coat the camshafts, camshaft carriers, bearing caps, and the hydraulic lifters as well as the friction washers with assembly lubricant before putting the cylinder head in its place, this is done by feeding the primary chain through the hole present. New cylinder head bolts and washers should be lightly lubricated with oil before being fitted finger tight into the engine block and head before going through three torque stages, employing the use of a special tool to reach the exact final torque angle. Take carefully beaded washers and stretch-type bolts should be replaced if they are worn out. Fit the intake camshaft sensor and the lower secondary chain guide, torque the torx bolts to correct torque setting. Replace the camshafts back into the engine with the crankshaft in the proper position so that it will not interfere with the piston-valve. connect the oil pipe to the described double VANOS unit, screw the coolant pipe fasteners tightened with a new sealing O-ring. Before that, fit the intake camshaft cover and then the cylinder head cover, the exhaust manifolds complete with new gaskets and new nuts and bolts; coat the heads of the manifold studs with copper paste. IllWorksPreRecon Check that the electrical harness for the oil pressure sender and the coolant temperature sensor is connected before you reinstall the intake manifold. After that, connect back the throttle assembly harness connector carefully in the correct position. As the general rule, always hook up the battery and double check all ground wires to ensure that none of the engine related electronics are compromised, as well as refill and bleed the cooling system, and change the oil and oil filter. Last but not the least, in case you are using a crankshaft lock tool then you should now withdraw it to start with the engine.
