2006 BMW X3 Fuel Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to test the fuel pump power consumption in M54 six cylinder engine on 2006 BMW X3?
A: To assess the power consumption of fuel pump on the M54 engine, the following procedure is followed, First, take out the rear seat so that there is a way to the fuel pump and the fuel level sender. Take off the harness connector from the fuel pump, check with the volt meter to the fuel pump connector should 12.6 volts with the fuel pump circuit actuated if the battery is dead, charge it. Then connect a digital ammeter between the pump lead and harness and connect another jumper wire between pump and harness but test leads should not short to ground. Switch on the fuel pump and then draw an ammeter reading and compare the reading with the correct ones. High power consumption can also be attributed to a worn pump and, although it runs only intermittently, an overheated and seizing pump will cause fuel starvation and will ultimately require a new pump. On the other hand if power consumption is low this could indicate a blockage in the fuel line one should thus ensure that the return line and the pump pickup inside the fuel tank are not blocked before one goes out in the market to look for a new pump.
