This procedure is for vehicles with manual transmission. Flywheel and torque plate removal for automatic transmission vehicle is covered in 240 Automatic Transmission. Remove splash shield under transmission. Remove intermediate muffler and heat shield. Detach front (xDrive models) and rear driveshaft. Tie to side. Remove transfer case (xDrive models). Remove transmission. Remove clutch. Inspect flywheel for scoring, hotspots, cracks or loose or worn guide pins. Replace flywheel if any faults are found. Lock flywheel in position using BMW special tool 11 9 260 or equivalent. Loosen and remove flywheel mounting bolts. Remove flywheel. Clean flywheel bolt threads in crankshaft. N55 engines, check magnetic reluctor wheel for damage and correct orientation before mounting flywheel. All engines: Check flywheel location dowel sleeve for damage and correct installation. When reinstalling flywheel, position dowel sleeve next to two locating notches. Install flywheel using new self-locking bolts. Caution-Use new self-locking bolts to install flywheel. Do not reuse the old stretch-type bolts. Do not install bolts with Loctite® or similar thread-locking compound.
