Remove the drive axle. Use a seal removal tool or a screwdriver to pry the flange seal out of the differential or bearing pedestal. Remove the protective sleeve from the new flange seal and save it for use during drive axle installation; the seal has a protective covering to prevent damage to the sealing lip during installation. Use BMW special tool 31 3 130 or an equivalent seal driver to drive the flange seal into the differential or bearing pedestal as far as it will go; coat the sealing lip with transmission fluid and insert the protective sleeve into the seal. Install the drive axle by inserting the inboard end partially into the differential housing or bearing pedestal, withdraw the protective sleeve from the sealing lip, cut and remove the sleeve, then continue pressing the drive axle in until the spring clip snaps audibly into place. If reusing drive axles, replace the inner CV joint locking circlip. Complete the remainder of the installation in reverse order of removal and check the front differential oil level, topping off if necessary.
