    Q:
How to remove the Differential Seal on BMW Z3? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the differential assembly. Lift out the retaining plate. Matchmark the flange lock nut with the threaded shaft. Hold the drive flange with a retaining tool such as Tool No.23 0 020 and remove the flange nut, then press off the flange with a suitable removal tool such as Tool No. 33 1150 or their equivalents. Remove the oil seal with a suitable inside jaw type puller. Installation is in reverse order of removal making sure of the following. Coat the seal lip surface of the oil seal with differential fluid. Make sure the flange lock nut-to-threaded shaft matchmarks are properly aligned. Install the retaining plate.

    Q:
How to replace the differential seal and driveshaft oil seals on the BMW Z4? Posted by Customer
    A:
In order to replace the driveshaft flange oil seal you will need to; drain the differential- remove differential unit, secure in a vise. Take off the retaining plate and scribe alignment marks on the drive flange nut, the drive flange, and the pinion so that they can easily be replaced when reassembling, get rid of the old retaining plate. Having firmly fixed the drive flange with one hand putting on a metal bar, with the other hand, unscrew the nut and count the turns. Employ a puller to pull out the drive flange of the pinion and if it is worn out, change with a new one, for the dust cover. Remove the old oil seal and scrape the seat, subsequently lubricate the lips of the new oil seal with oil and insert the oil seal until it has reached the flushing position. Slide on the dust cover, position the drive flange at those marks and screw on the flange nut as tight as the last time without overdoing it. Replace the original retaining plate with the new one and fit the differential, and refill the latter with oil. For driveaxle flange oil seal for example, drain the differential oil, remove the bolt securing the constant velocity joint of the driveshaft and then secure the driveshaft to avoid movement. With caution, detach the driveshaft flange on the differential bearing, without damaging the dust seal; remove the flange and the dust seal and, if the latter is worn out, fit a new one. Remove the old oil seal, degrease the seat and fit a new circlip in the splined shaft. Lubricate the outside of the new oil seal at the country of the sealing lip, and then insert it into casing, it is possible if need to use a socket. This you have to install the dust cover and drive flange, now the circlip retain it in its place. Slide the driveshaft to the flange, and fit new attaching bolts and covers before refilling the differential assembly with oil.

    Q:
How to remove and install the differential seal and pinion flange on the BMW 325i? Posted by Customer
    A:
This procedure applies to both the front (AWD models) and rear differential. Removal: Remove the driveshaft and the exhaust system. Remove the retaining plate and make alignment marks between the driveshaft flange nut, the differential pinion flange, and pinion. Discard the retaining plate; a new one must be used during installation. Hold the differential pinion flange stationary by bolting a length of metal bar to it. Unscrew the nut, noting the exact number of turns necessary to remove it. Using a suitable puller, draw the differential pinion flange from the pinion and remove the dust cover. If the dust cover shows signs of wear, replace it. Pry the oil seal from the differential case with a screwdriver. Wipe the oil-seal seating surface clean. Installation: Smear a little differential oil on the sealing lip of the new oil seal, then press it squarely into the differential case until it is flush with the outer face. If necessary, tap the seal into position using a metal tube that only bears on its hard outer edge. Install the dust cover and place the differential pinion flange on the pinion, aligning the marks made during removal. Replace the flange nut, screwing it on by the exact number of turns counted during removal, so that all alignment marks align. Caution: Do not overtighten the flange nut. If the nut is overtightened, the collapsible spacer behind the flange will be deformed, requiring its replacement. This is a complex operation that requires the rear differential to be disassembled. Secure the nut in position with the new retaining plate, tapping it squarely into position.
