- Q: How to remove and reinstall the front shock absorber (strut) assembly and steering knuckle on 2014 BMW 428i?A: Raise the car and remove the front wheel, remove the brake fluid hydraulic line clip, and at the other side of the bracket on the strut free the wheel speed sensor wire and the brake pad sensor wire (left side only) from the holder; disconnect and remove the stabilizer link from the strut body, on AWD vehicles remove the front drive axle, remove the caliper from the steering knuckle and support it with a stiff wire then remove the brake disc, and on the left side unclip the ride height sensor from the control arm where Xenon headlights are fitted; loosen the control arm and tension strut bolts at the subframe to avoid damaging bonded rubber bushings and remove the control arm from the steering knuckle, then remove the tie rod end and remove the tension strut from the steering knuckle; at the rear of the engine bay near the hood hinges remove the left and right rear engine compartment covers by turning locks A 90° counterclockwise, lifting at the ring and removing the cover, remove any clip as required and gently pull the rubber dust boot cover from the top of the strut to remove it; remove the fasteners and separate the strut and steering knuckle from below (on the right side cover B+ jump start terminal with suitable material to avoid short circuit), disassemble and reassemble the strut assembly on a bench, then reinstall in reverse order, cleaning the inside contact surface of the strut tower, aligning the strut mount alignment pin to the strut tower, tightening bonded rubber bushing fasteners with the car on the ground and loaded and bouncing the suspension a few times before final tightening, and checking alignment when the job is complete.
