BMW 2002 Cam Gear

The BMW 2002 Cam Gear provides sharper engine response, allowing drivers to advance or retard the valve timing to provide greater torque and horsepower. Sitting on the front of the camshaft, this clever gear meshes with the timing chain. Small rotational changes shift when the valves open compared with piston movement, so the engine will breathe better across the rev range. This innovation of a Cam Gear is an iconic BMW hallmark with its roots in touring car competition. Because of simplicity, of which the factory designers did not spare, each 2002 model is based on a single overhead camshaft combined with one basic Cam Gear, so the fanatic will not find the multifarious factory styles, but only the durable, steel one that came on production cars. The Cam Gear accomplishes its purpose with precision cut teeth that maintain alignment while still allowing minute manual adjustment via the slotted mounting holes. This means the owner can adjust performance for city driving or spirited mountain running without swapping major components. Regular inspection of Cam Gear teeth and bolt tightness keeps the classic BMW running smoothly and preserves the lively characteristic that has made the 2002 legendary.

BMW 2002 Cam Gear Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How should you examine the teeth on the Timing Chain and cam gear wheels for wear, and what steps should be taken if wear is detected on BMW 2002?
    Posted by Arvin H.
    A:
The crankshaft gear wheel and the camshaft gear wheel teeth should also be checked for wear and tear with each tooth approximated by an inverted 'V' shape and touching the periphery of the gear wheel. When so worn, a side of each tooth in tension will be slightly concave in cross-section relative to the side on compression. Any indication of wear means that the gearwheels have to be replaced. Also, find the links of the chain for side slackness and if there is any amount of slackness found it should be replaceable with a new chain. In any case, it is recommended to replace the chain every 30000 ml or earlier if the engine receives a major rebuild, since the rollers on the chain may be slightly grooved if it is geared.
