How to renew the front and rear crankshaft seals during a major engine overhaul on BMW 2002?

In the process of major engine overhaul the crankshaft front and rear oil seals must be replaced. The front seal sits in the timing chain lower cover and can be removed using a hooked instrument once the crankshaft pulley is disconnected or you can in fact remove the timing cover to extract the seal and a tube is adequate as a drift. The rear seal is of the 'nippled' type and is located in a retainer which can only be reached after the removal of the clutch and fly wheel or the drive plate for the automatic transmission.
