BMW 2002 Water Pump

The BMW 2002 Water Pump recirculates coolant around the engine block to keep your classic vehicle from getting too hot and destroying important parts. The Water Pump, located at the front of the motor, sucks coolant from the radiator and pushes it along passageways in the water jacket. It permits the coolant to absorb combustion heat and then returns it to the radiator for air flow to strip the heat away. Those who know BMW know its heritage of solid engineering. That is reflected in the simple layout. The Water Pump on early 2002 models is belt driven mechanical. The Water Pump spins with the crankshaft, thus every change in engine speed gives the same change in the flow of coolant. Later editions of the same 2002 line began to see a switch to an electric Water Pump, which uses a dedicated motor to circulate the coolant independent of engine rpm. This offered steadier temperature control at idle or stop and go. Although the intention of every Water Pump design is to reduce overheating, the mechanical design is simpler but depends upon the proper tensioning of the belt and seal integrity. On the other hand, the electric variant reduces parasitic drag and belt-related wear. This provides BMW drivers with great efficiency and quiet operation.

BMW 2002 Water Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to properly disassemble and reassemble a water pump on BMW 2002?
    Posted by Dexter C.
    A:
Using a suitable two-legged puller, draw the pulley mounting flange from the water pump shaft, then extract the circlip and spacer ring which are now exposed. Support the water pump housing and apply pressure to the end of the shaft in the center of the impeller, which will push the shaft from the impeller and the shaft/bearing assembly from the water pump housing. Drive out the water pump seal and cover ring from the water pump housing and fit a new seal. To install the other components, press the shaft/bearing into the housing and then press the impeller onto the shaft using Loctite to secure it, ensuring there is a clearance between the face of the impeller and the housing of between 0.031 and 0.047 in (0.8 and 1.2 mm). Finally, press the flange onto the shaft so that the distance between the front face of the flange and the cylinder block mating face of the pump housing is between 2.957 and 2.973 in (75.1 and 75.5 mm).
