BMW 2500 Shock Absorber

The BMW 2500 Shock Absorber keeps the classic sedan on its feet by taming the bumps and preventing unwanted suspension movement. This makes rough roads into a smoother ride. Working together with coil springs on the chassis of BMW vehicles, each Shock Absorber contains a hydraulic piston that forces oil past precision passages to transform kinetic jolts into heat, which quickly dissipates to keep the wheels more in contact with the asphalt. Early 2500 editions applied a twin-tube Shock Absorber that was a simple two-chamber design, using the inner tube for damping purposes and the outer tube for storage of excessive fluid. This design proved to be dependable for everyday touring. As performance expectations increased, later 2500 models applied a mono-tube Shock Absorber with one larger cylinder and a floating piston to separate the pressurized gas and oil. This offered better heat management, reduction of fade, and enabled the unit to mount in any orientation. Both styles have the same objective, but the mono-tube reacts faster to small road inputs and maintains consistent damping on long spirited drives, which gives BMW drivers sharper handling without compromising comfort. Thus, the Shock Absorber continues to provide balanced control.

BMW 2500 Shock Absorber Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to remove, modify, and refit rear shock absorber strut assemblies on BMW 2500?
    Posted by Jean P.
    A:
These can include Nivomat self-levelling units or the conventional coil spring and damper units and the former can be had filled with the option of the later specification. Other changes included on older models include fitting of damper rings and rubber discs aimed at improving on ride comfort. It is agreed that suspension strut assemblies should always be renewed in pairs; because of alterations throughout the production period, it is recommended practice to take the old units to the spares department to ensure that they are matched with the replacements. In case of suspected faulty operation of Nivomat units, one has to contact BMW service station where checks using special equipment will be conducted. To reach this assembly you would have to elevate the rear of the car and support it properly, and set a Jack under the trailing arm to relieve the strut of weight. Loosen the suspension strut from the bracket and take out the upper centring bush of the wheelarch. While refitting, the spacer rings are placed in reverse of removal, and it is certain that the rubber protrusions are in the right position. When dismantling, it would be appropriate to use a compressor tool and the removal of the unit as well as compressing the coil spring and the removal of the sub-assemblies accompanied by tests and replacement of worn out rubber bushes. When assembling, check and make sure that the parts are well aligned as well as the screws well tightened. For later type damper rings, it can be modified fitted for the earlier models by the changed upper mounting studs and the enlarged strut upper mounting holes. It is also important to note that the modification of Nivomat units to spring strut type is possible by the removal of the anti-roll bar: then original components are replaced with new parts, and the modified Nivomat unit is reassembled and installed.
