BMW 325i Fuel Pump

The BMW 325i Fuel Pump pumps gasoline from the tank to the engine so that the car starts quickly and runs smoothly. Inside many modern 325i models, an electrically driven Fuel Pump sits submerged in the tank, combining with the sending unit to feed pressurized fuel to the injection system while also telling the gauge how much is remaining. Earlier carbureted versions of the 325i were equipped with a mechanical Fuel Pump that was mounted on the engine itself, with the camshaft lever pulling fuel at low pressure appropriate for a float bowl. The major difference between the two styles for the 325i is pressure capability, with mechanical units topping out around 15 psi and the electric units easily delivering 40 to 60 psi. They always stay cool because there is liquid around them, and they shut off automatically for safety when the electronic controls detect a problem. These improvements were a result of BMW's attempts to keep pace with the ever-increasing demands of fuel injection so that power, economy, and emissions could be improved. When hard starts, poor mileage, or weak acceleration are seen by a BMW owner, tests can be performed for voltage at the Fuel Pump, fuel pressure, and the assembly can be replaced if the readings are low. It is important to choose a Fuel Pump because a BMW engine requires 0.5 pounds of fuel per horsepower.

BMW 325i Fuel Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install a high-pressure fuel pump on BMW 325i?
    A:
To remove the fuel system, start by relieving the fuel system pressure and disconnecting the negative battery cable. Then, remove the engine cover, strut tower crossbrace, and sound insulator. Next, remove the ignition coils and disconnect the high-pressure line pipe fittings. Loosen and disconnect the feed pipe fitting on the high-pressure pump, and disconnect the electrical connector from the pump. Loosen the high-pressure fuel pump bolts and remove the pump, making sure to replace the bolts and O-ring. To install the pump, ensure the camshaft lobe is at its Bottom Dead Center (BOC) base circle. Lubricate and install the bucket tappet, then set the pump into the cylinder head and tighten the bolts evenly. Finally, reconnect the negative battery cable, start the engine, and check for fuel leaks.
