BMW 328i Ignition Switch

The BMW 328i Ignition Switch allows the driver to bring the engine and electronics to life with a simple turn of the key or push of a button. This controls the flow of power and protects against theft. Early 328i versions rely on a steering-column mechanical Ignition Switch in conjunction with a lock cylinder such that the insertion of the correct coded key will unlock the column, allowing it to rotate through ACC, ON, START, and LOCK stages. It will then send battery current to the starter, fuel injection, and components. If the key is removed, the column remains locked and the shift lever remains in the park position, thus discouraging thieves from taking the BMW. Later 328i models use a keyless push button Ignition Switch, with a fob transmitting a signal to the computer. Pressing the button START with the brake applied energizes the same circuits, but without jams found in keyed units. Both styles shut components off in OFF, but the way the buttons are set up has fewer moving parts, resulting in greater reliability for BMW drivers. Wear, vibration, or burnt contacts in the Ignition Switch can still cause a no-start, stalling, or flickering components, so keeping this Ignition Switch sound preserves everyday confidence in any BMW 328i.

BMW 328i Ignition Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to remove and install the ignition switch on the BMW 328i?
    Posted by Franck C.
    A:
The covered models use a coded fob instead of a traditional metal key. Inserting the fob into the switch allows the use of the engine start/stop switch, which actually starts the engine. Carefully pry off the switch trim, remove the mounting bolts and pull the switch from the instrument panel. Disconnect the electrical connector as the switch is withdrawn. Installation is the reverse of removal. For E-series chassis models, using a blunt, fiat-bladed tool, carefully pry the decorative trim strip/air vents from the instrument panel. Disconnect any electrical connectors as the trim is removed. Squeeze together the clips and push the engine start/stop switch from the trim. Installation is the reverse of removal. For F-series chassis models, using a trim tool, pry out the switch from the instrument panel, then disconnect the electrical connector. Installation is the reverse of removal.
