BMW 330i Drive Belt

The power generated by the engine is delivered to the alternator, water pump, power steering pump, and air conditioner via the BMW 330i Drive Belt. The early models of 330i utilized one fiber-reinforced V-belt. However, as more components came to reside in the BMW engine bay, the system evolved into multiple belts that consumed space and required frequent retightening. The modern edition BMW 330i now comes with a serpentine style Drive Belt. This belt is a flat V-ribbed loop that winds around all the pulleys at once while being guided by idlers. The use of a spring-loaded tensioner helps to automatically keep it snug while winding around the pulley system. A benefit of this design is low maintenance. As the Drive Belt is made from tough EPDM rubber, it goes through wear by losing rib height rather than showing visible cracking. An easy way for drivers to check the rib depth is rather than searching for splits. The Drive Belt can still chirp or squeal, caused by misaligned pulleys or a weak tensioner. This indicates heat and slippage that shorten the life of the belt. Some later models even specify self-tensioning stretch versions, eliminating separate tensioners. Every BMW 330i has a Drive Belt whether V-belt, conventional serpentine, or stretch design. This belt must be examined for fraying, glazing, fluid contamination, or rib rounding and swapped out before failure strands the vehicle.

BMW 330i Drive Belt Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
What is the role of the Drive Belt operation and why should it be regularly inspected on BMW 330i?
    Posted by Randall R.
    A:
However, belts are required for the proper running of a vehicle and they are subject to wear and tear which calls for regular checks. These models use drivebelts to drive alternator, power steering pump, air conditioning compressor while engine coolant pump and cooling fan is electrically driven. When checking the belt, ensure that the engine is off and manually inspect both sides for cracking separation fraying and glazing. Twist the belt around so that you can examine underneath it for tiny cracks that may be acceptable-replace the belt if there are any lengthwise cracks or when pieces drop out resulting in noise. To save time later on, mark the direction of rotation when taking off the old drivebelt; then release tension by compressing tensioner with a wrench or Torx bit and remove belt. Optionally keep tensioner compressed with metal rod thus securing its position while reinstalling it back into place by making sure it correctly positions on pulley grooves as noted earlier. Begin drivebelt tensioner replacement by removing the drivebelt first, then take out mounting bolts so as to get rid of tensioner from there. Finally reassemble new one in reverse order remembering to change aluminum mounting bolt at this stage.
