How to raise the BMW 335i and replace the front and rear wheel speed sensors?

Raise the car and support it safely. For the front wheel speed sensor, work in the junction box located in the wheel housing to separate the electrical harness. Unscrew the sensor mounting bolt at the steering knuckle and remove the sensor. The installation process is the reverse of removal, and a thin coat of Staburags®NBU 12/K or equivalent grease should be applied to the speed sensor and housing. For the rear wheel speed sensor, first remove the right wheel well housing liner. Again, work in the junction box in the wheel housing to separate the electrical harness. Unscrew the mounting bolt in the rear wheel bearing carrier, and the installation is the reverse of removal, with a thin coat of Staburags®NBU 12/K or equivalent grease applied to the speed sensor and housing.

The BMW 335i Speed Sensor translates wheel or driveline rotation into electronic pulses, which are then relayed to control modules, allowing the BMW 335i to ascertain the speed of the automobile. The Speed Sensor feeds real-time information to the engine control unit and the ABS unit, which helps the traction control and braking systems react instantaneously. This allows smooth power delivery to the wheels while preventing the wheels from locking up. The Speed Sensor found on early 335i models is of the passive type. It uses a magnetic pickup in conjunction with a toothed tone ring. The pair generates a sinusoidal waveform every time a tooth passes. Hence, it is low cost and highly durable. Subsequent BMW editions upgraded to an active Speed Sensor, which retains the well-known reluctor ring but adds onboard electronics to make the signal sharper, widen air gaps, and get dependable readings at very low speeds. Therefore, more advanced BMW stability software can be supported. Each 335i, irrespective of generation, continues to deploy a Speed Sensor at every wheel to monitor rotation, as well as a drivetrain Speed Sensor that informs the car of how fast it is going.
