Raise the front of the car and remove the road wheel. Make a length reference mark on the tie rod, then remove the outer tie rod end. Cut the rack boot clamps and slide the boot off. Loosen and remove the inner tie rod shaft from the steering rack, ensuring to turn the steering until the end of the rack is as far inside the rack housing as possible to avoid damage. When reassembling, grease the tie rod taper so that the rack boot support buffer or the small end of the rack boot slides on the tie rod when tightened, preventing the boot from twisting. Inspect the boot for any signs of damage and replace it if necessary, using new band clamps, which come with the new rack boot. Installation follows the reverse order of removal, ensuring threaded parts are clean, applying anti-seize paste on inner tie rod threads, tightening the inner tie rod to the rack in two stages, using new self-locking nuts where applicable, and utilizing previously made reference marks to temporarily set the toe. After reassembly, have the car professionally aligned and carry out the steering angle sensor adjustment using a BMW scan tool.
