- Q: How to remove and install the engine oil cooler integrated into the oil filter housing on N20 and N26 engines on BMW 428i?A:The oil filter housing on N20 and N26 engines contains an integrated oil cooler that cools engine oil. First remove the intake manifold after the draining of the radiator as well as cooling system. The oil filter cap should be loosened to permit the oil in the filter housing to flow into the pan. Use hose pliers to pinch off the coolant hoses under the oil cooler. Detach the hardware and pull off the water hose with a fitting, using a shop rag to catch coolant. Eliminate the fastener securing the oil filter housing to the cylinder head. Remove the coolant hoses from the oil filter housing by unlocking the hose clamp and the coolant hose retainer. Use a shop rag to catch any coolant. It is recommended to remove the air filter housing for more working space. Disconnect the mass air flow sensor harness located at the oil filter housing's side. Detach the oil filter housing fasteners and remove it from the cylinder head; use a shop rag to absorb the oil. Reinstallation is the reverse of removal.
