- Q: How to replace the xenon Headlight Bulb on BMW 428i?A:Xenon igniter unit replacement is covered under Xenon bulb replacing in this repair group; vehicles equipped with xenon Headlights (high intensity discharge or HID) utilize a special high-voltage bulb and control unit for combined low and high beams, while LED adaptive head lights use LEDs for both high and low beams. Caution: do not handle bulb glass with bare fingers because dirt and skin oils cause premature failure; if necessary, wipe the bulb using a clean cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol, and use an antistatic mat and handle the xenon bulb and igniter module with care because their physical and mechanical properties are very sensitive. Raise the vehicle and support safely or, if the vehicle cannot be raised, turn the wheels left or right to access the panel, switch the lights off, and remove the headlight fuse(s) from the ECL Electrical Component Locations; procedures may vary slightly based on vehicle model year and equipment. For xenon bulb access, working at the front wheel housing liner unclip the plastic retainers in the direction of the arrows and remove the trapdoor behind the headlight assembly, remove the plastic low beam bulb cover counterclockwise, remove the bulb holder and bulb, and reinstall in reverse. For xenon bulb replacing, working at the back of the low beam detach the harness connector from the xenon bulb ignition unit, unlock the ignition unit retainer and fold it down, remove the ignition unit (C) and xenon bulb together from the headlight, when installing ensure the ignition unit seats correctly on the headlight (D), reinstall in reverse and make sure the cover is firmly seated on the headlight.
