BMW M3 Brake Master Cylinder

The BMW M3 Brake Master Cylinder turns foot pressure into hydraulic pressure that enters the brake circuits and holds the car in place with confidence. Inside its cast iron or aluminum shell, dual pistons, riding on springs and seals, pressurize fluid from the moment the pedal is moved. Then, they spring back home so that the reservoir can again fill through precisely sized ports. Each generation of BMW improves the hydraulic passages so that they offer improved modulation. This Brake Master Cylinder setup balances force between front and rear wheels. Every unit since the late 1960s has the dual circuit layout which ensures that if one line fails, the other will still slow the vehicle down. Earlier M3 versions often combined the Brake Master Cylinder with an integral metal reservoir and a single bail cap, while later BMW versions are more likely to have a lightened external nylon tank suspended by O-rings and capped with threaded caps. The major difference between the two is easier inspection and reduced weight. Many M3 models have the Brake Master Cylinder mounted to the front of the vacuum booster for direct pedal feel. Preventing moisture from entering the system and detecting leaks at the booster connection, which do not let in moisture, keeps the Brake Master Cylinder in good health and leaves drivers with the precision brake response that they have come to know from a modern BMW M3.

BMW M3 Brake Master Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to remove and install the Brake Master Cylinder on BMW M3?
    Posted by Haley M.
    A:
When replacing the brake master cylinder use a line wrench to unscrew or screw the brake line flare nut to serve the purpose of installing or removing the brake master cylinder. If ASC+T is fitted in the car, then there is BMW Service Tester for proper system bleeding and because of certain safety and liability issues this job is better left with the BMW dealer. First, begin by draining brake fluid from the reservoir and also remove the clutch hose if it's accessible, using a small flat blade pry tool to pull the pipe clamp free. Thoroughly flush and clear all brake line connections, then unbolt the reservoir-to-brake master cylinder mounting bolt on the right side of the brake master cylinder and unplug the reservoir, using a trim panel puller if required. For the E36 models, turn the engine off, and remove the connectors to the harness for easier access. Next shut off the brake master cylinder and disconnect the line connections using a line or flare wrench and put the connections plugs if available. Subsequently, it can be necessary to unscrew the mounting nuts and extract the brake master cylinder out of the booster, and in this process do not lose the O-ring. For installation, examine the O-ring placement at the mounting flange and clean these two surfaces, then fit the brake master cylinder tighten the nut to 14.5 ft. lbs. or 20 Nm. Torque the brake lines to 10 ft lbs and reconnect the harness connectors for E36 models. Wash the reservoir with brake cleaner or isopropyl alcohol and lubricate the spigots and O-rings with clean brake fluid, and put the reservoir back in. If needed replace the clutch hose using a new clamp, add fresh approved brake fluid to the reservoir and bleed in the same procedure as used above.
