BMW M3 Heater Control Valve

The BMW M3 Heater Control Valve is responsible for controlling the flow of hot coolant so that the cabin is warmed up quickly and predictably. Sitting between the engine and heater core, the Heater Control Valve opens to direct coolant flow in a forward direction when you dial up heat and shuts down to reduce flow for cooler air, allowing BMW occupants to fine-tune interior comfort even in deep winter. Early versions of cable-operated designs were of the Bowden style that actuates a flap. Later M3 versions were of the vacuum actuated type with a diaphragm that defaults to the open position so that it is open for fail-safe warmth. The recent M3 versions use electronic solenoids controlled by pulse width modulation, a configuration that positions the Heater Control Valve with the great precision. All styles have the same mission, but the electronic type has the precise metering, the vacuum unit provides simple on-off control, and the cable system relies on lever force, features that are available in all generations of this icon in BMW. Constant thermal cycling and chemically active coolant can corrode seals, stick the mechanism, or create leaks. Thus, any M3 can lose consistent warmth and alert BMW drivers a Heater Control Valve is going bad, and timely replacement of the Heater Control Valve avoids cabin dampness and engine risk.

BMW M3 Heater Control Valve Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to remove and install the heater control valve on BMW M3?
    Posted by Dmytro K.
    A:
To eliminate and install a heater control valve on E30 models, you start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal and removing the center console as well as instrument panel trim. Drain coolant; detach hoses that are used to transport the coolant from the control valve; and remove wire connections. Loosen the clamp of the coolant pipe and get rid of bolts that hold it at heater connections and pipe. At the connectors, replace O-rings then reassemble valve/pipe as shown in Figure 10-20. Connect the firewall hose for coolant, reinstall console/trim, fill/bleed cooling system and reconnect negative battery cable. For E36 models, unplug electrical plug from heater control valve then drain coolant. Disconnect hose connections then pull rubber mount off valve assembly. Put upper part of valve into mount, pressing bottom part into mount when installing it(Numrich Auto Parts Corporation). Reconnect electrical plug to it at this time while putting back hoses at their original position. Fill up/bleed the cooling system (BMW AG). It is highly recommended to have these units serviced by skilled automotive technician who has been certified by relevant authorities (Davidovich). Open glove compartment door to remove microfilter which cleans air entering passenger compartment and take out inner trim (figure 10-21). Take off screws holding cover on side of heater unit then remove glove compartment door for replacement purposes only (BMW AG). After installing new filter you must not forget put back its cover hence enclosing glove box door too.
