How should oxygen sensors be handled and installed in N51,N52,N54 six cylinder engine on BMW 335i?

Oxygen sensors are installed at the front and rear of the catalytic converters. Prior to sensor removal, use a BMW scan tool or equivalent to read out and clear ECM fault codes. Care should be taken when handling oxygen sensors, as they are easily damaged by shock. To avoid possible engine damage, do not mix up oxygen sensor connectors; mark connectors before disassembling. Begin by removing the upper engine cover, raising the vehicle, and supporting it safely. Disconnect the oxygen sensor harness connectors. For pre-catalyst oxygen sensors, release the right side tie rod from the steering rack. The harness connector for cylinders 1 - 3 is colored black, while the connector for cylinders 4 - 6 is colored grey. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to sensor threads and confirming that the sensor electrical harness connectors are routed and connected correctly. Avoid overusing anti-seize lubricant and do not contaminate the tip of the sensor with it. When using tool 11 7 030 together with swivel tool 11 9 150, reduce tightening torque by 3 Nm to 47 Nm (35 ft-lb). For post-catalyst oxygen sensors, the harness connector for cylinders 1 - 3 is also colored black, while the connector for cylinders 4 - 6 is grey. The same installation precautions apply, including the use of anti-seize compound and proper routing of connectors.

How to remove pre-catalyst oxygen sensors in N52 six cylinder engine on BMW X3?

To unbolt pre-catalyst oxygen sensors on the N52 engine, one requires a 22mm crow-foot wrench and knows that M54 engine is almost the same. Start with the removal of the engine covers and numbering the connectors of the harness oxygen sensors while on the top of the engine. On right side of the car, above the exhaust manifolds, there are two Torx bolts which hold the bracket onto the exhaust manifold: remove them and pull the bracket off. For installation reverse the removal process, if there is no anti-seize compound on the threads of the sensor apply little of it, and check the connector of the sensor electrical harness.

What is the role of oxygen sensors in exhaust emission management on BMW X5?

The handling of evaporative fuel vapors from the fuel tank has been made tighter with additional ORVR venting control and enhancement of the fuel tank leakage detection system. The fuel vapour recovery system during refuelling collects and stores hydrocarbon fuel vapour where pressure from the incoming fuel forces the vapours through the breather hose to a container, then into the charcoal canister thus enabling the system to breathe in the right components. To deal with the exhaust emissions, there are four oxygen sensors, two pre-cat and two post-cat. The post-catalyst sensors are traditional heated zirconia systems that produce a steady voltage when running properly, while the precatalyst sensors are Bosch LSU planar wideband types which make use of zirconium oxide ceramic layers for brisk reading over a broad air-fuel mixture range. The sensors especially intended for best operation need the ambient air as a reference gas and it enters the node through the harness connectors. If it malfunctions, the connector ought to be inspected for contamination, cleaned thoroughly and the harness reconnected in order to remove oxidation from the pins.
