Front and rear caliper removal are similar unless otherwise noted; insert a pedal prop and depress the brake pedal slightly to prevent brake fluid from escaping when detaching brake lines. Raise the car and support it safely, then remove the wheels. For the left front wheel, work in the junction box in the wheel housing to separate the brake pad warning sensor electrical harness. For the right rear wheel, remove the small underbody plastic cover if necessary, then work in the junction box under the body near the trailing arm mount to separate the brake pad warning sensor electrical connector and unclip the harness from the trailing arm. For brake hose removal, remove the clip securing the brake hose to the front strut for front brakes and the bracket securing the brake hose to the trailing arm for rear brakes. At the brake caliper, loosen the brake hose fitting and use shop towels to catch any dripping brake fluid. Remove the caliper bracket mounting bolts from the steering knuckle for the front caliper or from the trailing arm for the rear caliper. Lift off the caliper and spin the assembly off the hose, then plug open fluid lines and ports. Inspect the brake caliper for signs of leakage and check that the caliper piston slides smoothly into the caliper; replace the caliper if any faults are found. Installation is the reverse of removal, and the entire brake system must be bled before driving the car.

The BMW X3's Brake Caliper uses hydraulic pressure to generate clamping force that presses the pads onto the rotor to give the SUV confident stopping power. Each Brake Caliper houses one or more pistons that sit in bores containing seals and a dust boot, along with a bleeder screw to purge trapped air and a port to accept the brake hose. The early generations of X3 models utilized sturdy cast iron floating units selected by BMW for a balanced cost and reliability. A floating Brake Caliper contains the piston solely on the inboard side and slides on the guide pins. As a result, when the fluid pressure increases, the whole body shifts and squeezes the two pads. Later X3 models retained the floating style on many trims. On performance variants, however, the Brake Caliper design was upgraded to fixed ones.
