How to remove and install the upper control arm on BMW X3?

Raise the vehicle and remove the rear wheels. After removing the coil spring with the trailing arm still supported by a jack stand, proceed to remove the upper control arm bolt, noting the direction of bolt installation for reassembly. To detach the upper control arm, first remove the stabilizer bar link from the stabilizer bar, then take out the rod for the right height sensor on the passenger side only. Next, remove the nut on the reverse of the bolt and pull the bolt toward the rear of the vehicle. Extract the upper control arm from under the vehicle through the wheel well. For installation, reverse the removal process while ensuring to use previously made marks for the eccentric bolt and fit the eccentric washer. Utilize new self-locking nuts and tighten the fasteners to their final torque only after the vehicle has been lowered and the suspension has settled. It is advisable to have the vehicle professionally aligned upon completion of the job.

BMW X3 Control Arm

The BMW X3 Control Arm is the vital connection that allows each front wheel to have vertical movement while being securely tied to the chassis. Mounted with rubber bushings to the frame on one side and a ball joint to the steering knuckle on the other, this Control Arm has the ability to pivot each time there are bumps or springs pushing the wheel up or down. This ensures that ride comfort and precision of handling are maintained. Earlier versions of the X3 applied stamped steel Control Arm pieces, which were strong but prone to rust. In later iterations, the Control Arm was improved to cast iron or lightweight cast aluminum, which made the SUV more corrosion resistant and allowed it to handle sharper turns due to a reduction in unsprung weight. On the 2011-2017 X3 models, BMW further refined the geometry to reduce tire wear.
