BMW X3 Vapor Canister

The BMW X3 Vapor Canister captures fuel vapors to be burned instead of being released to keep the air cleaner and improve economy. In each X3, this Vapor Canister is filled with activated charcoal that stores hydrocarbons until the engine vacuum opens the purge path that sucks up the vapor through the purge valve into the intake where it burns with the normal fuel mix. For reliability, the Vapor Canister housing stays sealed from dirt. Early BMW models had a simple carbon canister near the engine bay or fuel tank coupled only with a purge valve and a pressure-balanced fuel cap, although later more advanced BMW X3 models gained a vent solenoid, tank pressure sensor, and replaceable filters, allowing the engine control module to perform leak tests on the system and illuminate if vacuum targets are missed. Despite these upgrades, the basic responsibility of the Vapor Canister remains the same, which is to store fumes until purging, a step that replaced the vented caps applied before the 1970s that allowed raw gasoline vapor to escape. Drivers do not even feel the system, but if the fuel cap is loose it can simulate a leak on a current X3, and periodic tightening of the BMW fuel cap helps the Vapor Canister work flawlessly.

BMW X3 Vapor Canister Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to remove and install the vapor canister located behind the right rear wheel well liner on BMW X3?
    Posted by Andro R.
    A:
To replace the activated carbon canister which is placed at the right side behind the right rear wheel well liner, the rear of the car should be lifted properly using a professional car lift or jack stands because a floor jack is insufficient, and then the following steps should be followed, Start by enlisting the services of a wrench to unlock the bike and take off the right rear wheel and also the right rear wheel well liner. After that, unscrew the line connections at the carbon canister and the fuel filler neck before taking out the fasteners and lowering the carbon canister down a bit. Remove the electrical connector from the DMTL pump then unbolt the harness guide clips that are from the carbon canister mounts then pull out the canister from the car. To install, use the procedure as explained above but in the wrong sequence of the whole process.
