With the exhaust system fully cooled down, raise and support the car for access to the exhaust system. Separate the rear mufflers from the center muffler, then remove the center muffler hanger mounting nuts. Place a tall jack stand under the center muffler to support the exhaust system, and detach the right and left oxygen sensor electrical connectors. Remove the right and left catalyst mounting bolts, and lower the center muffler and catalysts, ensuring assistance is available due to the weight of the exhaust system. If equipped with a one-piece center muffler and catalysts, measure the length of the pipe section on the replacement catalytic converter and transfer the measured distance to the installed catalytic converter prior to cutting. Measure the length of exhaust pipe sections on the replacement center muffler and transfer the measured distance to the installed exhaust system before cutting. Use an exhaust pipe cutter to cut the pipe(s) and a file to deburr the cut pipe end(s). Note that the pipes on the center muffler are welded together, so grind the old weld smooth if necessary before refitting. Assemble the catalyst(s) to the center muffler using band clamps, and remove the oxygen sensor with a crow-foot wrench, ensuring to coat the sensor threads with anti-seize paste during reinstallation. The installation follows the reverse of removal, using new gaskets and hardware while coating the hardware threads with anti-seize paste. Ensure there is at least 20 mm (3/4 in) clearance between the exhaust system and vehicle underbody at every point, and loosely install the exhaust system band clamps, mounting hardware, and hangers before tightening fasteners to their final torque.
