How to disconnect the battery and remove the ignition switch on BMW X5?

Disconnect the negative (-) cable from the battery and cover the terminal with insulating material. Prior to disconnecting the battery, read the battery disconnection cautions provided. Remove the lower left dashboard trim panel and the upper and lower steering column covers. Working at the left side of the steering column, pry out the ignition switch electrical connector lock and detach the connector from the switch. Remove the protective paint covering the ignition switch fasteners and then remove the fasteners. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to correctly align the switch drive to the steering lock and secure the switch fasteners with paint or lacquer after installation.
